Making Cross-Quarter Progress

Greetings from HumanaNatura at the cross-quarter! In the natural year, we are now midway between the more evocative period of the recent solstice and the naturally more balanced time of the coming equinox. Everywhere on earth, there is clear but unmistakable change – away from the depth of winter and height of summer and toward the relative balance of spring or fall in each hemisphere – an ongoing rhythm of life on earth that touches and can aid us all.

A Moment in the Everchanging Light and Rhythm of the Natural Year

In the HumanaNatura natural health system, and as explained in our Mastering The Natural Year graphic and post, we recommend extra progress on our Natural Life Plans around each cross-quarter. At the equinox-nearing cross-quarter, this is so we have adequate completed actions and learning at the equinox – in another six weeks or eighth of a year – when HumanaNatura encourages reflection and updating of our plans.

If you have not yet created a Natural Life Plan to guide your use and expression of the third HumanaNatura technique, Natural Living, our links will take you to our planning worksheets and seven-step planning process. Shrimp Provençal Salad Meal

OurPlate Score: 10/10          Follow Us On Facebook

We thought we’d start off our 2017 posts with a healthy, delicious, and fairly elegant salad meal, and one that is easy to prepare too. Though in truth, healthy, satisfying, and elegant meals are always easy to create when we eat the HumanaNatura way and follow HumanaNatura’s OurPlate healthy eating guidelines. In this case, our meal involves low-in-the-marine-food-chain shrimp, generous leafy greens and veggies, and vegetable fruits and berries – all among the healthiest foods we can consume.

img_20170113_132225

Our example HumanaNatura Salad Meal begins with a handful of medium-sized raw, deveined, and fully-shelled (tails-off) shrimp, which are tossed in a well-combined provençal marinade – comprised of two tablespoons of extra-virgin olive oil, one tablespoon of soft butter, black pepper, finely chopped garlic, a scattering of small capers, a squeeze of lemon juice, and about a tablespoon of finely chopped parsley. The marinated shrimp are allowed to sit, covered and refrigerated, for an hour or so.

When the shrimp mixture is ready, we begin by steaming a root base of diced white sweet potato and onion or shallot, along with a bit of crushed and finely chopped garlic and a dash of cayenne pepper, for about two minutes (but with about half the water as usual – see our Cooking With Steam Overview for guidance if you are new to food steaming). Then, a small bed of finely shredded cabbage, the shrimp mixture, the liquid marinade (why less water is needed), and some coarsely-chopped baby broccoli are placed on top of the root vegetables. Everything is steamed for another three or four minutes, and then this warm part of the meal allowed to cool covered for a few minutes.

As the cooked shrimp and vegetables cool, a salad base of mixed greens is placed on one side of a dinner plate. The cooked foods are then plated to the side of the greens, some halved grape tomatoes and dried berries are added, and the entire salad is dressed with olive oil and white balsamic vinegar, and garnished with parsley and black pepper. So simple, but an amazing and amazingly healthy meal too, and a great way to start the year. Enjoy!

Meat & Potatoes Salad Meal

OurPlate Score: 10/10          Follow Us On Facebook

Do you or those around you struggle with the desire for traditional meat and potato meals on one hand, and for healthier salads and green meals on the other? When we eat the HumanaNatura way and follow HumanaNatura’s OurPlate healthy eating guidelines, we don’t have to choose between these two seemingly competing desires. While our best science does suggest limiting red meats – see red meats and carnitine – this does not mean eliminating them completely, especially when they are extra-healthy and ecologically sustainable grass-fed meats – and as long as they are not processed meats, which indeed should be removed entirely from our diets.

img_20161229_135944a

Today’s sample HumanaNatura Salad Meal combines meat and potatoes with a selection of vegetables and fruit to create a hearty, satisfying, and healthy meal. We begin by steaming a few cubes of ground grass-fed beef on top of a base of diced sweet potato and onion or shallot, along with crushed and finely chopped garlic and a dash of cayenne pepper for about five minutes (see our Cooking With Steam Overview for guidance if you are new to food steaming). When done, the beef and root vegetables are allowed to cool for a few minutes. As the cooked beef and vegetables cool, a salad base of mixed greens is combined with a simple veggie mix of halved grape tomatoes and cut and de-seeded orange pieces. The cooked foods are then added, and the entire salad is dressed and garnished with parsley, black pepper, and shelled pistachio nuts. Lastly, the beef and potatoes are further seasoned with a zig-zag of chili sauce, and the meal is served promptly. A delicious blend of traditional cuisine and healthy modern natural eating!

Greetings from HumanaNatura at the solstice! Around the world, we are now at one of two crucial milestones in the natural year. Today is the shortest day, start of winter, and beginning of a new natural year in the northern hemisphere. And it is the longest day, midpoint of the year, and start of summer in the south.

New Day Waits For You

A Moment in the Everchanging Light of the Natural Year

In the HumanaNatura natural health system, and as explained in our Mastering The Natural Year graphic and post, we encourage spending this and every solstice with family, friends, and community. With the extreme light and heightened feelings that come with the solstices, it’s a natural opportunity to celebrate progress in our lives and Natural Life Plans, break from our routines and seek new perspective, and encourage greater health and progressivity in others.

Naturally Balanced Salad Meal

OurPlate Score: 10/10          Follow Us On Facebook

Optimal natural eating first involves care, and then balance. After we remove harmful sugar-rich foods, nutritionally and ecologically less desirable grains and legumes, and other unnatural or unadulterated foods from our diets, we must still achieve a balanced mix of natural foods – with neither too many nor too few natural fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, and ensuring adequate natural fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Fortunately, when we eat the HumanaNatura way and follow HumanaNatura’s OurPlate healthy eating guidelines, creating naturally balanced and nutritionally optimal Salad Meals and Steam Meals quickly becomes second nature.

img_20161206_130934

The simple, rustic HumanaNatura Salad Meal we have featured today begins by steaming a serving of wild salmon and some chopped broccoli on top of a base of diced sweet potato and onion or shallot, along with crushed and finely chopped garlic, for about five minutes (see our Cooking With Steam Overview for guidance if you are new to food steaming). When done, the salmon and root vegetables are allowed to cool for a few minutes. As the cooked salmon and vegetables cool, a salad base of mixed greens is combined with a simple veggie mix of grape tomatoes, chopped red pepper, and diced avocado. The cooked foods are then added, the entire salad is dressed and seasoned with parsley and black pepper, and the meal is served promptly. Fast, delicious, satisfying, and naturally balanced!

Lessons of the Aquatic Ape

By Mark Lundegren

mark-2

There is a good chance that you know where your recent ancestors are from. Perhaps they lived where you are now, or maybe they were from another part of the world. If you are in doubt, low-cost genetic tests today can shed light on your immediate ancestral history.

But do you know where, and how, your ancestors lived in the more distant past – say, 5 million years ago? Through the archeological record, we understand that all modern people share a common set of ancestors – humans and pre-humans who lived exclusively in Africa until roughly 100,000 years ago.

This bit of science answers the where part of our ancient natural history (though in simple terms, since it omits later interbreeding with Asiatic Homo erectus people by some of our Homo sapiens ancestors as we left Africa).

human_aquatic_adaptations

Similarly, the how part of the lives of our distant ancestors is nearly as settled science. But there is an interesting controversy about our earlier life patterns that is instructive about scientific understanding and everyday knowing more generally.

In practice, examining this and other controversies, or questions about the quality of our understanding, can help us to better navigate a variety of modern challenges and uncertainties, and ultimately to think and act more optimally amid contemporary life.

As you may know, today’s scientific consensus is that, 5 million years ago, pre-humans of this time had descended from trees and begun to move out from forest cover in small foraging or hunter-gatherer bands, ones who would gradually come to dominate the increasingly dry and deforested savannas of Africa.

However there is an alternative view or hypothesis, touched on in the Our Past section of HumanaNatura’s Personal Health Program. This hypothesis proposes that we were aquatic apes for a time in this larger evolutionary transition. Though our distant ancestors clearly began as tree-dwellers and ended as land-dwellers, the aquatic ape hypothesis asserts that this transition might have been marked or interrupted for a time by an aquatic mode of pre-human life – with our ancestors spending many hours each day swimming and fishing in coastal waters.

The graphic above summarizes key features of the aquatic ape hypothesis, which in its essence emphasizes that a number of our distinctly human physical characteristics might be explained by an extended period of semi-aquatic life during our evolution (including our tight skin and ability to swim proficiently).

‘Full Natural’ Steam Meal

OurPlate Score: 10/10          Follow Us On Facebook

Readers from the UK, or ones who have traveled there, will probably understand our title right away. There, the ‘full’ breakfast is a common feature in many restaurants and inns. Typically referred to as a Full English or Full Irish, these meals come laden with an assortment of breakfast foods, and are filling but far from healthy. Our Full Natural breakfast is a Steam Meal intended as a still rich but far healthier alternative, one that is consistent with HumanaNatura health principles and that follows HumanaNatura’s OurPlate healthy eating guidelines.

full-natural-breakfast

Our Full Natural breakfast begins by steaming some diced yam, onions, and garlic, seasoned with red and black pepper, for about two minutes. A bed, or nest, of shredded cabbage is then added, 2-3 cracked eggs are placed on top, and the meal is steamed for another two minutes. Chopped red pepper and broccoli florets (or your favorite cookable veggies) are added, and the meal is steamed for two more minutes and then allowed to sit covered for about another minute. The cooked meal is then plated and served promptly, after being garnished with splashes of soy sauce and sesame oil, a bit of black pepper, a scattering of sesame seeds, a zig-zag of chili sauce (or ketchup), and peeled and chopped orange. This morning meal will fill you full and keep you healthy!

A Moment in the Everchanging Light and Rhythm of the Natural Year

In the HumanaNatura natural health system, and as explained in our Mastering The Natural Year graphic and post, we encourage review and renewal of our Natural Life Plans during the twice-yearly times of natural balance that are the equinoxes. Chicken & Kiwi Salad Meal

OurPlate Score: 10/10          Follow Us On Facebook

Nothing says New Zealand like kiwifruit, except that kiwis are originally from China and today are grown around the world. In any case, the good news is that many of us have access to this delicious fruit throughout the year. And like other fruits, kiwis are easily made a part delicious, inviting, and extra-healthy meals, when we eat the HumanaNatura way and follow HumanaNatura’s OurPlate healthy eating guidelines. Our Chicken and Kiwi Salad Meal is a great example of how fruit can naturally improve and enliven our daily meals.

IMG_20160616_133223

Our featured HumanaNatura Salad Meal begins by steaming some bite-sized chicken pieces, seasoned with red pepper and a Mediterranean herb mix, on top of a base of diced carrots, white sweet potato, and red onion, along with crushed and finely chopped garlic, for about five minutes (see our Cooking With Steam Overview for guidance if you are new to food steaming). When done, the chicken and root vegetables are allowed to cool for several minutes or are chilled, covered, for an hour or more. As the cooked chicken and vegetables cool, a salad base of mixed greens is combined with a simple veggie mix of chopped tomatoes and cucumber. Arrange the cooked chicken and root vegetables on top of the salad, and garnish it with sliced kiwi, finely diced red onion to taste, chopped cilantro, and a scattering of seeds or nuts.
