Making Cross-Quarter Progress

Greetings from HumanaNatura at the cross-quarter! In the natural year, we are now midway between the naturally more evocative period of the recent solstice and the more balanced time of the coming equinox. Everywhere on earth, there is clear but unmistakable change – away from the height of summer and depth of winter in each hemisphere and toward the relative balance of fall or spring – an ongoing rhythm of life on earth that touches and can aid us all.

A Moment in the Everchanging Light and Rhythm of the Natural Year

In the HumanaNatura natural health system, and as explained in our Mastering The Natural Year graphic and post, we recommend extra progress on our Natural Life Plans around each cross-quarter. At the equinox-nearing cross-quarter, this is so we have adequate completed actions and learning at the equinox – in another six weeks or eighth of a year – when HumanaNatura encourages reflection and updating of our plans.

Walking Versus Running

Visit HumanaNatura          Follow Us On Facebook

By Mark Lundegren

mark-2When discussing the HumanaNatura natural health system with others, I am often asked why we advocate walking over running in our Natural Exercise technique.

For many of us, running seems like real exercise, while walking is, well, just walking. And this is especially true if we envision short walks on flat walkways, as opposed to long ones on hilly footpaths.

Still, it is true that, step-for-step, walking is clearly less intense, and seems less like exercise, than running – and than many other aerobic activities. But ironically, it is exactly because of this quality that walking proves superior as a health promoter, especially across many people and over time.

Walking RunningIn practice, walking – including hiking – is a more natural and, for many of us, more naturally enjoyable human activity, compared with running and other forms of intensive exercise. For people overall, walking offers greatly reduced risks of injury, is easier to sustain as a practice in our lives, and is far more likely to be practiced on a lifelong basis. Walking is also flexibly practiced and requires no special equipment. For all these reasons, the case for walking is pretty strong.

Beef & Orange Steam Meal

Sometimes, only beef will do. Though we recommend limiting red meats – and always eating sustainable grass-fed varieties – beef can be an occasional or even regular indulgence and still be healthy, especially when we eat the HumanaNatura way and follow HumanaNatura’s OurPlate healthy eating guidelines. Our Beef and Orange Steam Meal shows how beef or any red meat, simple veggies, and a piece of fruit can be combined to create an extraordinary, satisfying, and healthy meal in just minutes.

Today’s example HumanaNatura Steam Meal begins with a base of diced carrots, white sweet potato, and onion, along with crushed and finely chopped garlic, upon which several bite-sized cubes of beef are placed. These foods are seasoned with red pepper and coriander, and initially steamed for about three minutes. Then, a mix of shredded cabbage and carrots, and a bit of cut orange bell pepper, are added and the meal is steamed for another two or three minutes. A handful of chopped baby spinach is added, the heat is turned off, and the meal is allowed to sit covered for a minute or two. The meal is then plated and served promptly, after being garnished with splashes of soy sauce and sesame oil, a bit of black pepper, a scattering of sesame seeds, a drizzle of sriracha mayonnaise, and peeled and chopped orange. Simple, and simply delicious!
