Special Holiday Salad Meal!

OurPlate Score: 10/10                                   Follow & Network on Facebook

With many end-of-the-year holidays upon us all, we thought we’d show how a special and naturally healthy holiday meal can be made the HumanaNatura way and following HumanaNatura’s OurPlate guidelines. Other than the extra step of marinating a protein food before oven roasting , this meal is as quick and easy to make as it is festive and inviting to enjoy.

IMAG0435

Our naturally healthier version of a traditional holiday meal begins with chicken breasts, which are marinated refrigerated for a few hours in olive oil and wine vinegar with garlic, turmeric, coriander, orange peel, finely chopped onion and figs, a scattering of anise and sesame seeds, and black pepper. The breasts are then oven roasted and basted periodically until done, and allowed to sit briefly before slicing and serving  Once sliced and while still warm, the breast meat is pared with a generous half-plate of greens, julienne-cut cucumber and celery, and halved grape tomatoes. The meal is then garnished simply with roasted pistachios, parsley, garlic bits, paprika, and black pepper. Extra special but not a lot of extra work…so you have more time to spend with family and friends!

Happy Solstice Greetings!

Greetings from HumanaNatura at the solstice! Across our planet, we are now at the extremes of light and darkness in the natural year. In the northern hemisphere, this is the shortest and naturally most constrained day of the year, but the beginning of longer days and lengthening light. For the south, it is the height of the year and a jubilant time of sweeping light, especially in the south’s higher latitudes, marking the change from spring to summer.

In either case, we are halfway between the relative balance and calm of the fall and spring equinoxes, when HumanaNatura encourages review and renewal of our Natural Life Plan. At the solstice, HumanaNatura instead recommends life and health-affirming celebration and time with others – as a complement to reflection and planning, and in an ancient human rhythm that has its roots before recorded history.

If you have not yet created a Natural Life Plan – guiding your use and expression of the third HumanaNatura technique of Natural Living – the links we have provided will take you to our planning worksheets and get you started with seven-step progressive planning process. Together, these resources can help you begin more intentionally health-centered and open-ended life in the days and weeks ahead.

HumanaNatura’s newest community newsletter was released today as well, which is published eight times yearly in harmony with the natural year. To receive future HumanaNatura newsletters and learn about the benefits of membership in our global practitioner-advocate network, go to Join HumanaNatura.

Health & best wishes at the solstice,

Say Goodnight Twinkie…

OurPlate Score: -4/10                                   Follow & Network on Facebook

Hostess, the U.S. maker of iconic junk food that includes the Twinkie, is reportedly going out of business after an 80 year run. We can only hope so.

While we sympathize with workers displaced by the bankruptcy, from a health standpoint the chain of events leading to Hostess’ shuttering has to be seen as good news.

After all, the real story here is declining sales and a growing lack of market relevancy. People are buying less white bread and unhealthy sugar-rich snack foods, Hostess’ mainstays for more than two generations.

More than likely, the rights to the most well-known Hostess products will be purchased and these products will be produced again. Perhaps in new locations and at lower costs, in an attempt to keep these offerings alive in a world of growing health awareness and stalling demand for toxic food.

And while those of us prone to nostalgia may hope for a Hostess brand renaissance, at HumanaNatura we take a very different view and will say simply, goodnight Twinkie, and hope that it is a very long night indeed.

With the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday upon us, we thought we’d show how a special and naturally healthy Thanksgiving meal can be made the HumanaNatura way and following HumanaNatura’s OurPlate guidelines. Other than the extra step of roasting a turkey breast, this meal is as quick and easy to make as it is festive and inviting to behold.

Our naturally healthier version of a traditional Thanksgiving meal begins with a turkey breast, which was oven roasted and basted periodically until done, and then allowed to sit briefly before slicing. Once sliced and while still warm, the breast meat is pared with a generous half-plate of greens, parboiled broccoli florets and thinly sliced red onion, diced cucumber, halved grape tomatoes, and chopped dates. The meal is then garnished with dried cranberries in keeping with the holiday, along with parsley, garlic bits, paprika, and black pepper. Extra satisfying and a reminder to give thanks, this holiday and at every meal.

Holiday Anytime Salad Meal!

OurPlate Score: 10/10                                   Follow & Network on Facebook

Ensuring meal variety and enjoyment is crucial, if you want to sustain and make the most of eating the HumanaNatura way and using HumanaNatura’s OurPlate guidelines. One way of doing this is by turning tasty protein foods normally eaten only at holidays, like turkey or roasts, into everyday foods. This change can be an unexpectedly good strategy for varying our meals, since many holiday foods are inexpensive away from holidays…and often are easily prepared in simple and creative ways that are healthy, quick, and a great break from more traditional day-to-day foods.

Today’s “holiday anytime” salad meal begins with a small turkey breast that’s pan-seared on both sides and then cooked covered on medium heat with onion and garlic bits, turmeric, paprika, parsley, and black pepper. After cooking for about 15 minutes and then allowed to cool a few more, it’s sliced and served with mixed greens, sliced baby cucumber and red onion, halved grape tomatoes, and a bit of diced mango . This simple but festive and satisfying mix of foods is garnished with a reprise of parsley, paprika, lemon, and black pepper. A great blend of warm and cool, spicy and sweet, holiday and everyday!

Re-Focusing Your Creativity

By Mark Lundegren

Are you a creative type? Or would you like to become one? New research suggests this personal quality may be more important to our natural health than many of us realize. Of course, it’s long been known that certain personality features and resulting behavior patterns are associated with superior health and well-being. So the idea that creative traits have practical health and quality of life benefits shouldn’t be a total surprise.

Zinaida Serebriakova Self-Portrait

In the popular Big Five personality model – which emphasizes the traits Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness & Neuroticism – a variety of research has shown some of these traits to be strongly correlated with health, success, happiness, and longevity. Neuroticism, for example, has been found broadly correlated with poorer health outcomes, while Conscientiousness and Agreeableness have been found to accompany or lead to superior states of health and well-being.

New research published in the Journal of Aging and Health, and picked up by the scientific and medical press, examines the trait of Openness and its association with longevity. This research is important because the trait of Openness is defined somewhat more broadly than the other Big Five traits and there is considerable scientific controversy today regarding both how to measure Openness and its health and quality of life consequences.

Yummy Leftovers Salad Meal!

OurPlate Score: 10/10                                   Follow & Network on Facebook

Home economists say we should never go shopping hungry, since we are apt to make poorer food choices. This isn’t a problem when we eat the HumanaNatura way and follow HumanaNatura’s OurPlate guidelines, even when our refrigerator is running low on food. Why? It’s not only because we get you in the habit of spending all your time in the healthiest parts of your local market, but also because even a bit of HumanaNatura leftovers at home can make for a quick and yummy meal before you shop. Here’s a great example.

This delicious salad meal is light and satisfying, preparing us for shopping or anything else we need to do, and only took about ten minutes to prepare. The salad begins with a small piece of salmon. It’s pan-seared with red onion, garlic bits, turmeric, and black pepper and then cooked covered on medium heat until done. While this extra-healthy fish variety is cooking, we scrounged for the last of the fruit and veggies in our fridge: a bit of arugula, half of a cucumber, a dozen grape tomatoes, an orange, and a still ripe kiwi lurking in back. It’s all combined and garnished with parsley, paprika, lemon, anise seeds, and black pepper. A beautiful and delicious way to make the best of whatever you’ve got on hand!

Optimal Fitness – Simple & Not

By Mark Lundegren

An important goal of HumanaNatura is to make the principles of progressive natural health understandable and simple in practice. We do this in a number of ways.

One is the organization of our natural health system into four parts, translating a diverse and often abstract body of science into a clear and practical set of techniques. Another way is HumanaNatura’s OurPlate healthy eating guide, which turns the often confusing topic of optimal natural nutrition into a simple image that is easy to remember and apply. And our HN-100 Program gradually introduces the HumanaNatura system and our key natural health practices in small weekly steps spread over 100 days.

HumanaNatura’s OurPlate Healthy Eating Guide

The fact that we use these and other tools to make natural health and fitness promotion less complicated should tell you something – that the topic and underlying science of achieving modern natural health and quality of life are at once simple and not so simple.
